Welcome to Creative Writing!
Have you ever thought that you would like to be a novelist like Steven King, a dramatist like Shakespeare, a poet like Walt Whitman, or a screenwriter for a series like Breaking Bad, Pretty Little Liars or the next Hollywood Blockbuster? Whether or not you dream about a future in writing, this course will help you develop into a better writer. Not only will you practice with different genres and formats, but you will also learn to use different writing devices and techniques to make your writing stronger. Writing is a process. Part of that process is the willingness to take risks and to accept advice and criticism in order to make your work better. work block: continue to work on your autobiographies. Thursday October 1 Autobiographies are due. Make sure to fill in a self evaluation before you hand them in. Thursday October 8 Next Thursday you will be handing in your journals for a grade. You will also be handing in 1.5- 2 pages of your suspenseful stories. Make sure to hook your reader and create a suspenseful atmosphere. Friday October 16 Hi Creative Writers. I just finished looking over your journals and I must say I was very impressed. You all have the right idea. And just in case you didn't know, I think you are all super cool, intelligent, imaginative and creative. Keep up the great work and trust in your abilities. Read an excerpt from "The Book Thief" Discussed creativity in writing style People handed in suggestions of other things they would like to work on. SURVEY MONKEY Monday November 9 Handed in our Letter Home Assignment Took the class survey Writer's journal: discussed writers' territories. Lists/Mind maps about things you know well and that interest you. Tuesday November 10 Journal prompt: Respond to the Remembrance Day Ceremony Thursday November 12 Begin Filling out Short Story Outline Sheet Monday November 16 Prompt: When horrible events take place in the world I... Fill out the Character Conflict sheet and hand in. Tuesday November 17 Computer Lab: Type Short Story will have more time on computers Thursday. Monday November 23 We handed in our journals We watched the Ted-Ed video:"How to Write Fiction that Comes Alive" We discussed "Show" vs "Tell" and Vivid verbs. Discussed Peer Editing-see handout. Watched: Wonder Years Christmas Episode to show example of memoir story telling. Tuesday December 1 Working on story outlines (Be ready for Computer lab Thursday) Thursday December 3 Computer lab-have a rough copy ready for Monday's class. Monday December 7 Computer lab- Peer editing-have a friend in class exchange stories with you and complete the editing sheet. Tuesday January 5 Come up with rough ideas for commercial- We looked at an example of how to format the script. Next day-working on computers to type up a good copy of script. Videos will be due on Monday Jan. 18th. Thursday January 6 We watched the coke commercial and looked at its format.We worked on the computers in our groups to write our scripts. Tuesday January 12 Continued to work on scripts and ads. Monday January 18 Victor's Prompt: Write a letter you would find in a time capsule. What would you tell your older self?
